Doosan Introduces Puma 480 & 480L Turning CentersDoosan Introduces Puma 480 & 480L Turning Centers

February 1st, 2010

Doosan Infracore’s Puma 480 & Puma 480L machines pack the power for heavy and interrupted cuts, and the rigidity for high precision and mirror finishes.  Features include 60 Hp of turning power…2,975 ft-lbs of low end torque…and up to 6,870 lbs Z-axis thrust.

Puma 480 models feature widely spaced, wrap-around guideways for unsurpassed long-term stability and accuracy. Each is induction hardened, precision ground, and bonded with a low friction floroplastic coating that reduces wear and dampens vibration for superior surface finishes. A final hand scraping assures an ideal surface for lubricant flow.

Massive Meehanite beds further dampen vibration and help dissipate heat. Its 45o slant bed allows easy access to tools, chucks, and work pieces, while assisting coolant flow and chip removal. Torque tube design, a characteristic of all Puma horizontal turning centers, eliminates bending and twisting, and provides through-the-casting air flow for cooler temperatures.

The headstock casting is mounted on the same ground surface as the tailstock to maintain perfect alignment and center height. The heavy duty, cartridge-type spindle is supported by a double row of cylindrical roller bearings on either side of duplex angular thrust bearings. The cylindrical roller bearings feature a large contact surface, assuring the high rigidity needed for heavy cuts with high precision.

Power is supplied by a two-speed gearbox, generating spindle speeds up to 1,500 rpm and powerful low end torque. The gearbox and motor are isolated from the spindle to eliminate the transfer of heat and vibration.

Double pre-tensioned ball screws, supported on both ends by precision class P4 angular contact thrust bearings, are located on the X and Z axes. Both are driven by large diameter ball screws selected for high accuracy, feed thrust and rapid traverses. The ball screws are protected by torque limiter clutches to minimize damage in the event of a crash.

The 12-station turret employs a large 12.6” diameter Curvic coupling and exerts 26,200 lbs. of hydraulic clamp force. Indexing repeatability is +/-0.0005o. A high-torque index motor controls turret rotation, deceleration and clamp. Turret indexing is non-stop bi-directional, with a 0.25 sec. next-station index time. A rotary encoder determines the turret position, and a proximity switch confirms clamp.

The Puma 480 turning centers are suitable for parts up to 25.6” diam. by 40” long. Its sister machine, the Puma 480L accepts parts up to 80.4” long. The draw tube I.D. for both models is 6.55”. Standard features include an automatic tool setter, programmable tail stock, tool monitoring systems, waylube separation, high/low chucking pressure, and a Fanuc Ethernet function that enables communication between individual PCs or network stations.
