Hermle to Debut C 42 U 5-Axis Machining Center and Mill/Turn Concept at IMTS 2010Hermle to Debut C 42 U 5-Axis Machining Center and Mill/Turn Concept at IMTS 2010

June 14th, 2010

Hermle Machine Company of Franklin, Wisconsin, the North American headquarters of Mischinenfabrik Berthold Hermle AG located in Gosheim, Germany, will exhibit two machining centers including the new C 42 U in Booth #S-8136 at IMTS 2010.  The Hermle exhibit will also feature a video presentation demonstrating the new MT (Mill/Turn) concept which will be available on the C 42 U, C 50 U and C 60 U machines.

According to Robert Komljenovic, President of Hermle Machine Company, “The C 42 U was designed in response to market demand for greater capacity in the C 40 U range.  The increased need for high precision 5-axis performance in rugged new alloys and materials is growing, and we see the C 42 U filling that need in areas such as moldmaking, medical appliances and instruments, aerospace and others.”

Utilizing Hermle’s patented modified gantry design, the C 42 U is available with a mineral cast base to dampen vibration and minimize thermal conductivity.  The X, Y and Z axes are 800-800-550 mm, respectively, with rapid traverse of 60m/min. in all axes.  The spindle features Hermle’s new slim-end design for deep cavity machining and is available in speeds of 10,000, 18,000 and 25,000 rpm.  The two-part spindle design incorporates six displacement sleeves for collision protection.

Tool change is accomplished by direct pick-up, and the magazine accommodates 42 tools.  Maximum tool length is 300 mm and diameter is 90 mm.  Tooling is SK 40 and HSK A 63 (the 25,000 rpm spindle utilizes only HSK A 63).  Chip-to-chip time is approximately 4.5 seconds.  Tooling can be expanded up to 160 pockets.

To accommodate customer needs in multiple applications, Hermle offers the C 42 U with a variety of table configurations.  For 3- and 4-axis machining, a rigid clamping table with a 1050 x 805 mm surface and a load capacity of 2,000 kg is available.  Five-axis versions incorporate swiveling rotary tables in three sizes: 800 x 630 mm with a maximum load of 1,400 kg; 440 mm with a capacity of 450 kg; and 420 mm with a 600 kg load capacity.

The compact design and integrated tool magazine result in a large and easily accessible work area and simplify installation.  The C 42 U requires no special foundation and can be easily lifted.  Controls are Heidenhain iTNC 530 or Siemens 840 D SL, and a variety of options are available for coolant application, chip control and tool management, among others.

Robert Komljenovic states, “The wide variety of choices and options are available with the C 42 U enable our customers to define a machine to their individual applications.  Like all of our C Series designs, it adapts extremely easily to partial or full automation.  Perhaps most important, it incorporates Hermle’s traditional philosophy of delivering high precision performance and long machine life.”

The C 50 U – Precision Performance for Large Parts

Also featured in the Hermle booth will be the C 50 U.  First introduced at IMTS 2008, the C 50 U has been well received by manufacturers and subcontractors involved in the production of large complex parts.  For the Show demonstration, a blisk will be machined from steel.  The C 50 U features X-, Y-, and Z-axis travels of 1000, 1100, and 700 mm, respectively, and can accommodate a workpiece weight of 2,000 kg.  Ideal for the full simultaneous 5-axis and /or 5-sided machining of large automotive parts, aircraft components or molds, the maximum part dimension is a diameter of 1000 mm and a height of up to 810 mm.  Supporting the superior size and strength of the C 50 U are further capabilities including:

  • Crane loading with door opening up to 1250 mm
  • Space-saving pick-up magazine integrated into the base unit
  • Three guideways with a single guideshoe for ideal force balance
  • Work platforms along the entire machine front and at magazine load station

New MT Series – Milling AND Turning Simultaneously in 5-Axis

The ability to mill and turn medium- to large-size parts without re-fixturing is now a reality thanks to Hermle’s new MT series.  Available on the C 42 U, C 50 U and C 60 U machining centers, MT capability brings new flexibility to even the most difficult 5-axis machining applications.

Designed to accommodate high table loads (up to 1,400 kg in the C 60 U configuration), the MT series features rotational speeds of 800 rpm, 500 rpm and 400 rpm in the C 42 U, C 50 U and C 60 U series, respectively.  Equipped with Hermle’s new slender spindle for deep pocket milling and turning, the machines are equipped with high performance torque motors and an integrated balancing system to ensure accuracy over time.

Heidenhain TNC 635 or Siemens S 840 D controls with 3D software deliver collision protection, safety technology and ease of operation.

A variety of options is available.  Robert Komljenovic comments, “One of the critical problems in industry is the need to move large complex parts between machines and to ensure that they are properly fixtured.  Hermle’s new MT Series not only eliminates that risk but can save considerable time and increase production."

“We look forward to greeting our visitors at IMTS and demonstrating to them how Hermle’s advanced concepts and long experience in 5-axis machining can keep them competitive into the future.”
