Busch Beats Gordon on Restart to Win at Richmond
May 2010 – Kyle Busch led the field to the green flag for the start of Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Richmond International raceway and then he led the field to the checkered flag 400 laps later to earn his first victory of the 2010 season.
Busch started on the pole after posting the fastest lap in Friday's qualifying session and then led the first lap and went on to completely dominate the first half of the race, leading an incredible 194 of the first 200 laps. Shortly after the midpoint of the race Busch began to report some issues with the handle on his No. 18 Camry for the first time on the night, but the M&Ms crew continued to make adjustments and as the race entered its final laps it was obvious that the correct balance had been restored. During a caution on lap 373, Busch hit pit road for his final stop of the night and opted for four tires, fuel and a tire pressure adjustment. From there, he restarted sixth, survived two more short caution periods and worked his way back into the top-five to restart second on lap 395. For the final five-lap sprint, he staved off four-time champion Jeff Gordon and led the final five laps en route to victory.
Busch would lead four different times for a total of a race-high 226 laps.
“It’s just unbelievable to be back in victory lane,” Busch said. “I got to say thanks to M&M’s and, of course, all these guys that do so much work on this team. I want to thank the fans. Always great to have all their support... These guys on this M&M’s Camry team have done such an awesome job. Can’t thank Dave Rogers (crew chief) enough. What an awesome guy he is. He’s made this team what it is this year and these guys have dug in really hard and given that extra effort.”
Denny Hamlin, who captured his first victory at his home track in Richmond last fall, started the No. 11 FedEx Ground Toyota in 30th position, but slowly worked his way forward through the field. Despite battling to find the proper handle on his No. 11 Camry throughout the night, Hamlin managed to work his way into the top ten in the later stages of the race taking over ninth by lap 300. He would climb has high as the sixth position but was unable to make a late-race move and finished the night in 11th.
Meanwhile Joey Logano started the No. 20 Home Depot Toyota in 23rd and would find himself battling mostly tight conditions throughout the night. He was able to gain several positions early in the race to work himself into the top-15, but struggled with tight conditions in the center of the turn. Logano and the Home Depot crew managed to keep the No. 20 Camry inside the top-20 and were able to battle to maintain their position on the lead lap to earn a 16th-place finish on the night.
